LUGGAGE SPOTTERS (TAGS)

LUGGAGE SPOTTERS - It can sometimes be difficult to locate your black suitcase amongst a sea of others...well no more! Each tag or "spotter" is a UNIQUE PIECE OF ART. All designs are original illustrations.

Attach these cheerful, bright, unique tags to your luggage and spot YOUR suitcase easily.

I have created these tags using "zentangle" (a highly meditative illustration technique) designs. From there I have brightly colored each tag. These images will not rub off. No two are ever the same.

The "spotters" (tags) are a hard plastic, (practically indestructible)and come complete with a black leather strap that attaches with a brass buckle.

Each tag is approx. 2 x 3.25 inches. The strap is approx. 5 inches long when laid flat.

Each order will contain TWO spotters (tags) and TWO straps. What you see here is a sampling of what is available. You will receive two equally wonderful, randomly chosen "spotters".

Hand Drawn Frames

Photoshop makes your life easy with layers.
Photoshop makes your life a nightmare with layers.

Hmmm...it can go either way. You might have a file with only a couple of layers, or you may have a file with one hundred layers. For this tutorial, I will show you how to choose all of your text layers at once, easily.

1. You see my file with many layers and the text layers dispersed throughout the file. If I want to move all of the text layers as a single unit, I will need to scroll down through the file and choose each one, or.....

2. Choose a single text layer and then go to the "Select" option on the top toolbar.

3. From there, choose "Similar Layers" this will select all of the text layers, (or any other similar layers you might wish to choose.)

4. Now all of your text layers are chosen for your editing pleasure.

5. Now you will able to move your text layers as a single unit. Simple Simon!

Photoshop Tutorial: DON'T CANCEL...RESET!

Often times, when working in Photoshop, I will use the trial and error method of adjusting images. With the preview button checked, I can see the immediate effect of the adjustment, and will sometimes find it not to my liking (this happens more often than not).

In the past I would cancel the adjustment only to have to re-open the same adjustment window to make another attempt. Well, NO MORE!

By holding down the Alt/Option key my cancel button magically turns itself into a reset button...this has become an invaluable time saver for me.

UNLOCK BACKGROUND LAYER in Photoshop

There may come a time, when working in Photoshop, that you will need to unlock the background layer.

The solution to this dilemma, is to simply drag the lock on the layer into the trash. You will then have unlocked your background layer!

Simple, quick, and painless.

WPA Federal Art Project / Posters for the People

I have created a slide show to highlight some of the posters that were created under FDR's Work Project Administration during the depression.

The work on these posters, and many other public art works, kept many artists, actors, musicians, dancers and writers off the dole, during the depression.

The Federal Arts Project was instrumental in bringing art to the masses. In the end, FDR's New Deal Art Programs brought to the public 2, 566 murals, 17,774 sculptures, 108,099 easel paintings and 240,000 prints.

The poster division of the FAP brought the art of graphic design to a level never before achieved. The silk screening process was perfected at this time, for the purpose of printing large quantities of posters. Over 2 million posters of 35,000 designs were created during the 6 year program.

Few of these posters survive. The Library of Congress is now in possession of about 900 of these works of art.

Please take a look at the slide show for a sampling of these beautiful posters.

TUTORIAL: How to Add a Vignette Border to a Photo in Photoshop

Today I will show you how to add a vignette border to your photos. Below you see a rather exaggerated example. You will be able to determine for yourself the particulars of your creation.

1. First open the photo you wold like to add the vignette to. Create a new layer on top of the original photo by clicking on the "add new layer" button in the layers panel, or by clicking "Shift + Cntrl + N" (Shift + Cmd + N for mac).

2. Once this new layer has been created you will want to fill it with black. Go to Edit-->Fill and then choose black from the dropdown menu or foreground if you have black selected as your foreground color.

3. With your "Rectangular Marque" tool, create a selection to be cut out leaving the darkened border. Make sure you feather this selection...see top tool bar for creating the feather depth. Feathering softens and creates the faded look of the selection...here I have used a 50 px feather which is rather severe, but I wanted to be able to give an easy to see example.

Once you have your selection, click "Delete" to remove the center of the layer leaving behind the faded black border.

4. Now you can adjust the opacity of the vignette layer to suit your needs. Playing around with the opacity and the feathering depth are pretty much all the adjusting you will need to find a look you like.

5. Now remove the selection by going to Select-->Deselect, or simply clicking Ctrl + D (Cmd + D for Mac).

6. You can further adjust the vignette by adjusting the opacity on the vignette layer. That's it!

Have fun with this and don't forget to try different feathering depths, opacity levels and even try using different shapes to make your selection.

TUTORIAL: How to Use Clipping Masks (Cutout an Image to Reveal the Layer Below)

In this tutorial I will attempt to explain clipping masks in Photoshop. Below is an example using text with a photo of my boy Max...as you will see...any bold silhouette type image works best.

Here we go:

1. First open a new document and choose Transparent from the background content dropdown box. Transparent backgrounds display as a gray and white checkerboard pattern, so don't be alarmed.

2. Apply your silhouette to the transparent background. I used a Photoshop paintbrush of a cow using black as my foreground color.

3. Open the image you wish to use for your background and drag it on top of the original image with the silhouette on the transparent background.

4. From the Layers menu on the top, choose "Create Clipping Mask" (Keyboard shortcut is Ctrl or Cmd+ Alt + G)

5. Now, depending on which layer you have active (highlighted) you can move either the background or the silhouette image to place where you like. (Be sure to have Auto Select box UNCHECKED or you will only be able to grab the background image.)

To move this image to another document, you must flatten it or save it as a jpg...

TUTORIAL: How to RESIZE an image in Photoshop

In this tutorial I will show you how to resize an image. Images may be resized using a variety of parameters. You can resize by a percentage, pixels, inches, centimeters, etc. You can choose to constrain your proportions, or create a different look by changing the proportions.

1. Open the document you wish to resize in Photoshop and from the toolbar, choose Image--->Image size. This will open a dialog box for you to choose your new dimensions.

2. Each option has it's own dropdown box for you to choose what kind of adjustments you would like to make. In order to simply make the original image a bit smaller, as in this tutorial, I have placed a checkmark in the box to constrain the proportions. I have also chosen to resample the image using "Bicubic Sharper" which adjusts the pixels most appropriately when reducing the size of an image.

Take a peek and fool around with each of the options to see what happens...this is often the best way to learn. You don't have to save your image until you have exactly what you are aiming for.

3. Once I have chosen the optimal size for the image (in this case I simply typed in a "6" inch height and the program did the rest by changing the width to 4 inches, because I chose to constrain the proportions) I then click OK and the image size is instantly adjusted to my specifications.

That's it! You have changed the size of the image. I save this re-sized image with a new name so as not to destroy the original...usually something like this: Serenity_small.jpg.

TUTORIAL- Type on a Path to Follow Shape

In this tutorial I will show you how to create text that follows along the perimeter of a shape. I use a simple rectangle, but this will work for any shape you like. The text will adapt to the shape you choose. (The text made need a bit of tweeking for font size, leading, etc. to fit perfectly)

1. First, open a new document and add a shape to it. In this example I am using the shape tool...you will see many options at the top for different shapes. Choose something you like and you're off!

2. With your cursor click and drag on your new document and your shape will appear. Now look in your layers palette and click on the "Paths" tab. At the bottom you will want to choose the third icon from the left (I have it circled)...if you scroll over it, it will display that this icon is to "Load Path as a Selection".

3. Now you will see the "Marching Ants" or the animated dashed line around your shape. This indicates that the perimeter of the shape is now a selection. The text we will add will follow this dashed line around your shape.

4. With the path highlighted in the "Paths Palette" click on your "Text" tool to begin adding the text. The text cursor will look like an I-beam with a sqiggley line through it when you place it over the path. This indicates that the text will follow the path.

It looks like this :

5. Now, when you type, the font will follow the "path" of the selection and continue until you run out of room.

6. The path becomes it's own entity, so you may move it independent of the original shape you created. Below is an example of a different design path...play with it...it's fun!

TUTORIAL: Cut Out Selection to Reveal Layer Below

Today I will show you how to create an image that is basically "cut out" or deleted to reveal the layer below. Above you see several examples using one selection to reveal a variety of background layers below.

Don't panic...there are a lot of steps, but it is easy if you just follow along.

First...open the image you wish to use for your background...in this case, an abstract of bright pink.

Second...open a second image filled with white the same size as the background image.

Now that you have two images opened, set them side by side as you see above.

On the plain white background I have placed a paintbrush image. I used black, but notice that the image includes shades of gray as well. You can use whatever you would like to create a "selection". This selection will eventually be removed to reveal the background but the shape of the selection will remain intact.

Next we will create the selection. With this contrasting image it is fairly simple. Go to "Select" (1) ---> "Color Range" (2).

With the "Eye Dropper" tool click on the white area and the above dialog box pops up. You have now made a selection of all the white area in the image. What we really want is to choose the areas that are black and gray. To do this we will "inverse" the selection (you can do this by checking the "inverse" box in the same dialog box or if you have already clicked OK and completed the selection, just go to the next step.

Go back to "Select" (1) ----->"Inverse" (2). You should now have the "marching ants" (the animated dashed line) surrounding only the NON white areas of the image. This is your SELECTION.

Leave this selected. We will now prepare the backround image.

With the background image (pink abstract) active, you need to add a new layer. In the layers panel click the icon with the two small squares (Add New Layer). You will see a new layer in your layers panel...see it in a blue highlight above.

If it is not already filled with white, we will need to fill it.

To fill this new layer, go to "Edit" ---> "Fill". Make sure you still have this new layer highlighted in your layers palette.

When you click fill, a new dialog box will pop up. Your foreground and background color choices should look like the image above (1). Choose foreground (2) with the opacity set to 100% (3).
Your background image will now be covered with a solid white layer.

Next we want to move our "Selection" over to this new layer on the background image.

With your "Move" tool (1), simply drag your selection (2) from the first file onto the background image. The "marching ants" will disappear. We need that selection to be reloaded.

To reload the selection, go to "Selection" ---> "Load Selection". The "marching ants" (selection indicator) will re-appear.

When you moved the selection over to the background file, you added a new layer...see it highlighted above. With the selection moved, simply hit the "delete" button on your keyboard. All of the color from your selection will disappear and you will be left with only the "marching ants" that indicate the selection.

We're almost there...stay with me now!

In your layers palette, click on the background layer with the image you want to reveal. With this layer highlighted, hit CNTRL + J (CMD +J for Mac). This creates yet another layer, with only your selection and it's background revealed.

We will now save only the selection cut-out to reveal the background. Still using the layer we just created (1), you will want to turn off the visiblility of the other layers (2). You do this by clicking on the little "eyeball" icons on the layers you no longer wish to see. This leaves only your newly created image on a white background.

Next go to "Layers" (3) menu.

We are going to "Flatten Image" which will compress all these layers into a single layer. You will be prompted to "Discard Hidden Layers?"...press OK.

There you have it! You are left with a single image that reveals whatever background you have chosen. As you see in my first image, you can use any background you like. Remember, your selection can be anything. It does not have to be a paintbrush graphic. As long as you have the "marching ants" around something...it is a selection.

TUTORIAL: How to Create a Black & White Photo with a Colored Highlight

Here is the effect I will show you today:

We've all seen photos where only one area has color and the rest of the picture is black and white. I will show you here a very simple way to accomplish this using Photoshop. As always, I am sure that this is not the only way to achieve this effect but it is the simplest way I have found.

Locate the photo you would like to apply this effect to. Here I am using my "Red was Clueless" image and will just be letting Red Riding Hood's signature attire appear in color.

1. Once you have your image, you will want to remove all color from it. Go to (1.) "Image" ---> (2.) "Adjustments" ---> (3.) "Hue/Saturation".

2. Now with the (1.) "Master" channel chosen you will want to slide the (2.)"Saturation" level all the way to the left. You can also accomplish this by typing in (3.) -100 in the box you see circled above. This removes all color information from the photograph, leaving you with a black and white image.

3. Now you will be "painting" back in the color you wish to have visible. In this case, I have "painted" in the Red Cape. This is accomplished by using the( 1.)"History" brush. This brush can be adjusted like any other photoshop brush. You can change the (2.) size, or even the (3.) opacity of the brush to suit the desired effect.

4. Above, you will see the end result. If you feel the color you have added back in appears too bright, or saturated, you can follow Steps 1 and 2 to fade out the color a bit. Play around, it's fun!

TUTORIAL: How to Create a Transparent Watermark

Any artist that posts images of their work online should add a watermark to the image. Watermarks discourage pirating of your work by others. I can't begin to tell you how many Etsy sellers have their work displayed in their shops, which, by zooming in, can easily be printed, by any novice with a printer.

This is not to say that adding a watermark to your images will eliminate all pirating. What it will do, is make it more difficult for others to steal your images.

So....I will show you how I have created the watermark I use on all of my images. It's appearance is a bit raised and rather transparent. You can adjust the opacity depending on the image you apply it to. Here we go..........

1. Create a new document with a "Transparent" background.

2. Next we will add the text you want to use, to this transparent layer. Double click on the foreground color choice and simply type in the hexadecimal number 808080 into the box you see circled above. This will give you a mid-level gray color.

3. After typing in your desired text (Ex. Your Shop Name), click on the highlighted text layer to save this text.

4. Now you will add a "Layer Effect" to this text, to give it a "raised" effect. At the bottom of the layers palette you will see an italicized "F" in a dark circle. Click this and choose "Bevel & Emboss" from the dropdown menu.

5. Once you have chosen the "Layer Effect" you will get a new screen, with a whole host of options. What you see above, are the default options for this effect. If your screen appears differently, just plug in the same selections you see above. Once your selections have been made, just click "OK".

6. Next, you will need to change the "Layer Style". In your layers palette (with the text layer chosen, or highlighted), simply click on the small, downward pointing arrow next to the word "normal" at the top of the layers palette. From there, move down and choose "Hard Light" as your "Layer Style".

7. Now you can play with the opacity...(see image above). Depending on the image you will apply this watermark to, you may want to increase or decrease the opacity.

8. Open the image you wish to apply the watermark to. While keeping both the "Watermark Text" and the chosen image both open, simply drag the text layer of the "Watermark" image onto the newly opened image. This will add a new layer to your chosen image. From there, you may want to play with the opacity for just the right look.

9. You will now want to save your image, with the watermark applied, for posting online or into your Etsy shop.

Don't forget to save the original file (where you created the watermark) for use on other images. It is probably best to save it as a .psd so that you will be able to drag that text layer onto other images.

When saving an image with the watermark for posting, you will need to save it as a .jpg for posting over the net.

TUTORIAL: How to Create Reflected Text in Photoshop

Do you want to learn how to create text with a reflection like you see above? Well, it's actually a lot easier than you think. There are a lot of steps, but if you bear with me, you will see how simple it is to create this effect.

As always with Photoshop, there are many ways to create the desired effect but this is how I do it.

Here we go:

1. Open a new document and add text in the color and font you desire.

2. Copy this layer by dragging it in the layers palette to the "Create New Layer" button.

3. You will now see that you have created a new layer with the same name and the word "copy" appended to it.

4. Now with the "copied" layer highlighted (or chosen) go to the "Edit" menu from the toolbar at the top of Photoshop. From there choose "Transform" ----->"Flip Vertical".

5. With the "Move" tool chosen, pull this inverted text to line up just below the original text...we are still working with the "copied" layer.

6. Now we will add a "Layer Style" to this text layer. At the bottom of the "Layers" palette, you will see in italicized letter "F" in a black circle...click this and choose "Gradient Overlay".

7. Doing step 6 will pop up the "Layers Style" menu...

a. Make sure you have your text color as the forground and white as the backround in the color choice box. (See #1)

b. From the dropdown menu you will find by clicking on the downward pointing arrow (See #2) in the "Gradient:" box, choose the first square...this is the "foreground to background" gradient.(See #3)

8. Make sure you have all the correct information in the required boxes. (see all red circles above) Blend Mode: Normal Opacity: 100% Gradient: Foreground to Background (which we did in the previous step) Angle: -90 (line in circle should be straight down) Scale: 100%.

Now click on OK to save these choices.

(It is fun to try to play around with each of these tools to see exactly what each effect does.)

9. Now you might want to adjust the opacity of this layer to get just the effect you are looking for. Here I have reduced the opacity quite a bit.

10. Still working with the "copied" layer (see#1) we are going to "Rasterize" the text to make it a bit more editable.

a. From the toolbar at the top, choose "Layer"(#2) ---->"Rasterize"(#3)---->"Type"(#4). This rasterizes the text layer we have been working on. Giving us more options on how to transform it.

11. To further create the illusion of a true reflection I like to transform the reflected text just a bit more. To do this I go to the "Edit"(#1) menu------>"Transform"(#2)------>"Skew"(#3). This will add a box around the text with areas (little squares) where you can tug and shape the text.

12. I have pulled both of the bottom corners out a bit in the direction of the arrows above...this creates an illusion of the text expanding towards the top of the reflection. I think this gives it a great little added touch. Of course you could skip this and just end the tutorial at Step 9.

Create Your Own Font in Minutes

Often times my work demands that I use a variety of fonts. There are tons of free fonts available on the internet and in this posting I told you where you could find them and how to install them for your own use.

Most font creating software is complicated, difficult to navigate and has a rather extensive learning curve. Years ago I had purchased a piece of software that promised to turn my own
handwriting into a font. That was fine then, but this software is long outdated and can no longer run efficiently on my computer.

Through some research I have found a simple to use, completely free solution. In a few easy steps that take mere minutes to implement you can create your own font! Use your own handwriting, create a stylized font or even a "dingbat" font.

The only requirements to use this program are a printer and a scanner, (or in lieu of that some image editing software that allows you to input your designs directly into the template). You will need the printer to print the template needed to design your font and a scanner to upload the template to the site. Once you have uploaded the scanned template you will be sent a font that is easily installed for your use.

The fonts that are generated through the My Fonts software are "vector based and thus scalable without loss of quality. The file extension is .ttf, but the generated fonts are in fact OpenType fonts with TrueType based outlines that will work on Windows, Macintosh, and Linux computers."

Lots of fun and you can even add your own signature to the font. Be creative...but be careful...fonts are addictive.

TUTORIAL: How to Instantly Fix a Photo Using Auto Levels

In this tutorial, I will show you how to instantly make a photo go from "OK" to "Fantastic!". This doesn't work for every photo, but it is a great place to start.

1. Find the photo you would like to improve and open it in Photoshop.

2. From the "Image" menu, choose "Adjustments" and then "Auto Levels". Just follow the numbered items in the image above. In just this one step you can drastically improve many photos...

3. That's it! Simple as 1, 2, 3...

Tutorial: How to install a Photoshop Paintbrush

In this tutorial I will show you how to add a paintbrush to your list of available paintbrushes in Photoshop. In this tutorial, I am using Photoshop CS2, and Firefox as my web browser. I am sure that you could apply this tutorial to almost any version of PS and any alternative web browser.

First thing you want to do is locate a free PS paintbrush you like on the internet. The site I use in my example is Brusheezy.com, but there are many places to find brushes....I will give a short list at the end of this tutorial.

Once you find what you would like to add...download it to your computer. Most often it will come as a zipped (compressed) file that you will need to "unzip".

When prompted, choose "save file".

Right click on the downloaded file and choose OPEN

Drag the opened file (with the ABR) extension to your desktop, or save it to a place where you will be able to locate it without any trouble.

In Photoshop, with the "brush" tool chosen, follow the numbers above.

1. Expand the brushes menu by clicking the downward pointing arrow next to the chosen brush at the top of the PS toolbar.

2. Click the right facing arrow next to the Master Diameter box...this will expand the brushes menu giving you a host of options.

3. Choose "Load Brushes"

Find the new brush file you just downloaded (it will have the .ABR extension) Double click the downloaded file and click the "Load" button.

That's it!!

Your newly added brushes will now appear in the brushes file at the bottom of the menu...

CAUTION:: Photoshop brushes are HIGHLY Addictive!

I have been recently plagued with a bit of photographers block. I take my camera with me everywhere I go, yet it hasn't left it's cozy cocoon in weeks.

Today I ran across a site which has given me a brand new outlook on the dictionary. The Photographic Dictionary is where photographers can lend their view to the vast world of the internet. Not just the literal, but the abstract will be captured by photographers and posted for the world to see and enjoy.

Change Background Color in Photoshop

In this tutorial I will show you how to change a background color in a Photoshop document. This was a request by Jim Juris...

1. Open a NEW document. It will appear on your layers palette as "Background". You can see it highlighted there in your layers palette on the right.

2. Create a new layer by clicking on the "New Layer" button at the bottom of your layers palette.

3. You will see the "New Layer" you just created in your layers palette now.

4. In this example I have added a paintbrush image to the document on the new layer. I simply chose the brush I wanted to use and put in on the new layer. Make sure the new layer is highlighted in the layers palette, or it will end up on your background layer.

5. Now choose or highlight the Background layer by clicking on it in the layers palette.

6. Now go to the "Edit" menu and choose "Fill" from the dropdown menu.

7. In this example I have chosen a red for my color which appears in the "foreground" on the toolbar to the left. (Note the red box that is circled). A menu appears once you have chosen "Fill" from the "Edit" menu. Depending on what colors you have on your tool bar, you can choose to fill the background with the foreground or background color.

8. Once you click OK the background color will change to your choice.

Because you added your paintbrush to a new layer, filling the background will effect only the background layer.
