How to find a FONT you like and install it in your computer

This tutorial will show you how to get a free font online and download it to your computer for use in your word program, photoshop program or any program that makes use of fonts.

First thing you want to do is find a font you like and would want to install. There are many good sources for fonts on the web. Just google "free fonts" and you will get a great big bunch of sites where you can download fonts for free. I will add a short list of my favorite font sites to the bottom of this tutorial.

For this tutorial, I am using a site called "Dafont". They have tons of fonts and also a utility to allow a preview of what you want typed out in a particular font...for this purpose, I have used the text Citrus Tree Designs.

1. Locate the font you like and click on the download button.

2. Choose to save the font you are downloading someplace you can easily find it once it is downloaded. I always save to my desktop. This makes it easy for me to find and once I have installed it I can delete that file from my desktop.

3. Once the download has completed just close the window.

4. Find the file you just downloaded...more than likely it will be a "zipped" or compressed file. Nothing to be afraid of here. (A zipped file is used to transfer large amounts of information in a short amount of time. ) You will have to "un-zip" it to get to the font file you need to install.

To un-zip the file RIGHT click on the file with the zipper and choose "Extract All". You will then get a screen that looks like the one below or something similar.

5. No need to change anything in the address bar, just let the extract utility do it's job and the "un-zipped" file will magically appear on your desktop. All you need to do is click "Extract".

6. Now the "un-zipped" or Extracted file should pop up on your screen. If it doesn't, it probably just means that you forgot to check the box in step 5 that reads "Show extracted files when complete".

If it does not pop up automatically for you, just look on your desktop for the file with the name of the font you downloaded that does NOT have a zipper on it and open it.

7. The font is now ready to install in your computer for you to use. Go to your "Start" button click and open your computer's "Control Panel". Do this while keeping the "un-zipped" font file you opened in the previous step open.

All you need to do now is DRAG & DROP the newly downloaded font into your control panel's font file. THAT'S IT! Your new font is now installed and ready to use.

Next time you open a program that uses fonts, you will see your newly installed font in the list of fonts you have available.

If you have any questions, or need any help...please just leave a comment and I will get back to you as soon as I have finished looking for my next new font! Enjoy....

Oh yea, here is the list of free font sites I promised:
